5 of the most unrealistic transfer rumours 2012-13
Some transfers stretch the realms of believability. Tevez and Mascherano joining West Ham in 2006, Eto electing to ply his trade in Russia or even the £80 million fee Real Madrid paid for Ronaldo.
The papers go into overdrive as soon as the transfer window opens, filling their sports pages with reams of outlandish rumours, but who can blame them? The very nature of transfer rumours gives you a license to print just about anything.
After all, it's only a rumour, it doesn't have to have any basis in fact.
Sometimes the news outlet gets it right and lands a major scoop, but more often than not, no deal ends up being done.
With that in mind, let's look at:
Okay, so it could happen, (and Jack Wilshire certainly wants it to) but you have it admit, it doesn't seem likely. Arsenal are in need of a top class striker but would Rooney fit the bill at the Emirates?
His enormous wages (as well as the old Arsenal/United rivalry) may hinder the deal and at 27 there probably won't be a massive resale value for a player that would cost in excess of £25 million.
Arsene Wenger is known for his prudence, but after losing RVP to United (and any chance of competing for the title) maybe the time has come to spend big and fight fire with fire.
4. David Luiz to: Bayern Munich
Bayern are certainly a team in the ascendency at the moment. The Champions League winners' already have an impressive squad and are said to rate Luiz, despite his perceived lack of consistency in some quarters.
Now, I think Luiz is a classy player who could compliment Bayern as they attempt to push on to new heights.
The reason why this rumour is dead in the water? The Munich sporting director Matthias Sammar was asked if there was any possibility of a bid. He simply replied "no."
Yet another Arsenal striker rumour? Suarez is undoubtedly a major talent, but when you think of the character of the Arsenal team as a whole, he doesn't really fit.
I have no doubt he could score 20+ a season, but is it really worth the turbulence he brings to the table?
Most of all, Suarez's problem seems to be with the British press as opposed to Liverpool, so one would expect him to leave the country altogether instead of moving to the capital.
When it comes to Suarez, anything could happen, so I won't rule out this rumour completely just yet, although I think Arsenal should just wrap up the Higuain deal and put all the striker talk to bed.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo to: Monaco
There are a couple of reasons why this deal makes sense. Monaco have spent big recently, with all the players signed sharing the same agent as Ronaldo.
Monaco have made recent strides signing coveted players such as Falcao so the blow of leaving an illustrious team such as Madrid would be lessened, plus the 0% tax rate for Monaco's citizens means Ronaldo would become the best-paid player in the world.
However, money doesn't seem to be a major motivator to Ronaldo, as his sheer level of professionalism and desire to compete at the highest level would surely dwarf any financial gain he would earn by joining Monaco.
Ronaldo strikes me as someone who wants to be the best and set records, whether he could do that at Monaco is debatable.
1. Wilfred Caballero to: Manchester City
Wilfred 'Willy' Caballero is being touted as Joe Hart's replacement at Man City. Why? Well we're not entirely sure.
The England stopper had a decent season between the sticks for City but new boss Manuel Pelligrini is said to want to replace him with the Malaga keeper. City are used to getting what they want and it may come at the expense of a keeper who's done little wrong.
Caballero is 31 and past honours include winning the Intercontinental cup in 2003 and a gold medal in the 2004 summer Olympics, but Hart has been a solid number one and was an integral part of their title-winning side.
At the moment. it's just a rumour and until sources back it up, Man City's keeper uses head & shoulders.
So that's the list, maybe I'll be proved wrong and they'll all come true. You can never say never until the window swings shut.
Honourable mentions - Edin Dzeko to Chelsea, Rooney to Barcelona, Tom Huddlestone to Hull,
