6 of the Worst Cheats/Glitches in online Games
Cheats can give a game new life, or help you past a certain section in single-player, but cheats used in multiplayer can be unbelievably rage-inducing.
In the past, the games industry used to focus on single-player experiences for the most part, but as online gaming exploded into the mainstream, multiplayer became the focus for many players and developers alike.
Cheats used to be personal; the only person you could really ruin it for was yourself, through mass online multiplayer gaming has changed the landscape and caused many a ragequit across all the major platforms.
Some people are naturally competitive and these games can mean a lot to them. It can be annoying to do things the legitimate way only to be lose because your opponent was cheating.
The worst cheats remove skill from the situation, ruining others enjoyment of the game.
Cheats such as:
6. Jumping under the map
COD: World at War is my favourite of the series, but the game was plagued with glitches that made some levels near unplayable.
The best way to combat this was to avoid the affected levels, as enemies under the map would murder you relentlessly, whilst any return fire pinged helplessly against the floor.
Most of the glitches were patched out of the online multiplayer eventually but some patches created even more glitches. Seeing the enemy team run to the glitch point and start jumping about is fun, but it ruins the immersion as well as the gameplay.
5. Becoming Invincible
Becoming invincible might be fun for the cheater, but it ruins any competitive edge in a game. What's the point in shooting in an enemy that doesn't die? If everyone had Godmode no one would want to play because it ruins the point of the game.
I think sometimes, Microsoft can be too quick to ban players, but completely ruining a game for other people just isn't justifiable, so I can understand why they wield the banhammer when they catch people doing this.
I could probably understand doing it once for laughs, but I don't understand how it doesn't ruin the game for the player as well as it must get boring after a while.
4. Turning off the Console
I don't think you should be 'forced' to finish a game if you don't want to, but purposely leaving to avoid recording a loss ruins the very record that you're trying to improve.
1v1 games like Street Fighter are obviously affected more than team games, if your opponent leaves in SF there isn't really much you can do.
Games like FIFA try to match you to players of the same skill level, so if you need to cheat to get higher in the rankings, you'll end up playing better-skilled players who'll probably cause you to leave even more.
It's true that games aren't always fair, but that doesn't mean your opponent should be forced to shoulder the burden.
On a side note, I think having the ability to turn the console off in a few clicks via the controller is a good idea but it gives people a greater opportunity to ragequit and screw up your stats.
3. Hosting lobbies to cheat (Boosting)
Some games have ridiculous challenges and trophies and players are forced to get together with their friends to complete them.
On the other hand, some people just want to 'boost' their stats to gain more points, no matter how boring it is and these lobbies are usually rife in FPS games.
I don't mind people boosting their stats, it's just the endless messages you get from people asking you to join in and help them out that really bug me.
I don't care whether you need 36 more headshots with a shotgun to get a trophy and I'm not willing to wait around for 15 minutes whilst you do it.
2. Hacking games for unfair advantages/Spam messages
Typical spam message:
From: xXEpicHackxorXx
Hi there,
Would you like everything unlocked in x game?
Typical Response:
Argh when I looked up at your message I died/crashed/conceded/FUUUUU!
The ability to communicate with other gamers via consoles is amazing, but just like with email, people started using it to annoy others and receiving spam messages in-game can be really annoying.
I played a lot of COD on PS3 and gained top prestige in most of the titles. Because every player could see my previous prestiges in MW3, I used to get endless messages asking me to hack their prestige.
When I (mostly) patiently explained that it wasn't a hack, people wouldn't believe me. I honestly don't care if people feel the need to hack their stats, it's just asking me to do it can get really grating.
1. Fake Gamerscores/Trophies
What's the point? You can get banned from Xbox Live (a service you pay for) just for the sake of a few numbers on a screen.
Some people put too much effort into their 'score', games should be enjoyed and it doesn't always have to be a competition.
Trophies shouldn't be used to measure how good a gamer is, although I do think that they are a good idea in practice.
The competitive nature of gamers can lead to trophy hunting being a competition in itself, which I have no issue with.
When people 'hack' trophies or achievements they're missing out on the most important aspect, actually playing the game.
I hope you enjoyed the list and no, it wasn't in order of importance.
I think some glitches and cheats can be fun, but after a while they start to take their toll. If I lose (which I do regularly) I'd prefer it to be because of skill or chance, not cheats or glitches.
