6 of the most annoying sidekicks ever

6 of the most annoying sidekicks ever

Sidekicks are usually weaker than the main character, but have some defining skill or saving grace. Many provide comic relief or solid backup depending on the situation, but some are just plain annoying, constantly getting the others into trouble, making you wonder why they're even allowed to be there in the first place.

They don't have to be particularly useful. Donkey from Shrek is a great sidekick thanks to Eddie Murphy's performance, despite the fact the character has no talent, (aside from being funny.)

For every Chewbacca there's a Princess Peach, endlessly getting captured, dragging the hero into unnecessary situations and generally hindering the heroes on their adventures, while contributing nothing.

Characters such as:

6. Scrappy-Doo (Scooby-Doo)

Scrappy is probably the most annoying sidekick from my childhood. Constantly resorting to violence (despite his obvious all-round weakness) was supposed to be funny, but in reality it made him annoying.

I remember longing for the villain of the week to punt him into the stratosphere, (alas it never happened) but at least he was the bad guy in the movie.

He ruined the format of the show, replaced three of the smarter original characters and was generally just a stain on my childhood.

Thankfully he was dumped in favour of the original five, but the memories will probably haunt me forever.

5. Slippy (Star-Fox 64)

For those of you that don't know who Slippy is, here's a brief clip of his quotes from Star Fox 64.

That clip says it all really. Despite being male, Slippy was voice acted by Lyssa Brown, (who is obviously female.) Characters like Bart Simpson show that sometimes females can do male voices really well, but this definitely isn't one of them.

In-game, he's a terrible pilot who constantly screams in that high-pitch tone, but does provide some input as the resident 'genius' of the group.

Star Fox 64 was a great game, but Slippy was a weak team member when compared to Falco or Fox. Thankfully, they used a male voice actor for the next game, but the damage had already been done.

Douche Rating 6/10

4. Lori (The Walking Dead

Where to start? She undermines the main character constantly, acts as a burden to the rest of the group, causes arguments within the group and is a terrible mother.

She constantly tells others what to do, (despite the fact that she doesn't seem to have much respect within the group) and flip-flops around the men, slowly turning them against one another.

I understand that the stress of the situation took it's toll on Lori, but she completely buckled under the pressure and tends to put herself first in every situation.

Spoiler Alert: (Even when she finally dies, she won't stop tormenting Rick, constantly appearing as an apparition as his psyche seems to dissolve.)

Douche Rating 9/10

3. Claptrap (Borderlands)

Okay Claptrap is actually kind of cool, as seen here.

Claptrap provides comic relief and information for the main character, but still manages to be more annoying than the villain. There's a reason nobody went to his birthday party.

Generic Claptrap Quotes:

"Yoo hoooooooooo!"
"I am the best robot. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I am the best robot. Ooh, ooh, here we go!"
"Hey! Over here! I'm over heere!"

In the sequel, they really seemed to embrace his ability to annoy the player. He can't be killed and talks incessantly, constantly giving you information that you really didn't need to know.

Douche Rating: 7/10

2. Hope (FF13)

Hope is the resident tag-along kid in Final Fantasy 13, with one difference. His main objective is to kill one of the main characters in the misguided belief that he caused the death of his mother.

He fails horribly, but at least he learns the error of his ways and to be fair, the person he wants to kill (Snow) is pretty annoying. Hope at least has the chance to grow up and become a well rounded individual, (as seen in the sequel.)

Since most of the cast are pretty annoying, Hope doesn't stand out as much as he would in other titles, but that doesn't excuse his poor dialogue and troll logic.

Douche Rating 8/10

1. Jar Jar Binks (Star Wars)

Who else could it be? Many think of Jar Jar as a crude, ethnic stereotype as well as an complete and utter idiot.

He ruined the prequels for many fans and it didn't help that he was a CGI character that didn't look realistic.

His garbled dialect and inability to grasp most situations exasperated the audience as well as the people he travelled with. He was banished from his own people due to his incompetence, but still manages to take up valuable screen time as he provides 'comic relief' in the loosest sense of the term.

At least he isn't in the original trilogy, but with more Star Wars films due to be released 'at regular intervals' maybe we haven't seen the last of the annoying klutz.
